The Abeego wraps just offered fewer size options at the time of writing, but you could also cut them to size. We talked to Katerina Bogatireva, the founder of package-free store Precycle, and Lauren Singer, the owner of Package Free. Both Bogatireva and Singer have been living minimal-waste lifestyles for many years, and we considered their expert tips and recommendations when making our list of what to test.
But plastic food storage bags—used to store everything from sandwiches and on-the-go snacks to marinating chicken and freezer-ready rolls—are even more insidious. To test the produce bags, we stored leafy greens, herbs, and carrots in them for four days, then checked for freshness. We also put the same types of produce in a zip-top plastic bag as a control and compared the results. We then measured and weighed each produce bag to check its listed tare weights, and washed and dried them all several times to check for shrinkage.
Why you need to reuse your reusable bag
And because it requires a firm initial tug to remove, you’ll be pulling hard, and then it’ll suddenly release with ease, causing the bag to go flying along with all its contents. There are also measurement markings on the bag, but they’re off by about 4 ounces. Sobeys told CBC News that its paper bags are compostable and made from 70 per cent recycled paper.

I could not fully remove the Bolognese stains from the pleat even after two days in the sun and a rub-down with a baking soda-vinegar solution.

They’re convenient for keeping chopped vegetables, soups, dough, and leftovers in the fridge. Just avoid carrying around liquids in them if they’re going in your purse, backpack, or lunch sack. There aren’t many bad things to say about Stasher bags, but there are some notable problems regarding ease of use, especially for people with limited hand mobility. Gliding your fingers along the seal like you would a Ziploc doesn’t lock it, but it appears sealed.

Stasher Reusable Silicone Bag Multi-Pack
Single-use plastics like zip-top bags and plastic wrap are everyday items in many kitchens, but there’s a growing consensus that they’re not great for the environment. We think the first step to reducing your own waste is to find ways to use the jars and bags you already have. We covered various foods and vessels with beeswax wraps—including tomatoes, onions, avocados, apples, and bowls ranging from a 4-ounce ramekin to a 2.5-quart mixing bowl. We wrapped the same foods in plastic wrap and zip-top plastic bags, and checked on the foods every day for a week, then compared the results. We cleaned the wraps five times with a sponge, cold water, and natural dish soap, allowing them to dry completely between each wash, to see how they held up.
Stains remained on the re bags we tried, even after a trip through the dishwasher followed by a baking soda scrub. Compared with the zip bags, the thicker Stasher bags are also easier to hold and hand-wash because they aren’t as floppy, and their wider seals were less likely to gum up with food. The Stashers are made from a semi-rigid material that’s thick enough that the bags won’t collapse, but they still have a slim profile. They’re easier to stack in the fridge or freezer than flaccid plastic bags, and they take up less space than larger, rigid containers. Corey Rateau, of grocery-delivery service Good Eggs, told us he stores prepped ingredients in Stasher bags, and that he moves them from the fridge to the freezer when necessary. “More traditional plastic containers would be bulkier...or potentially crack or shatter in the freezer,” he said.

Although Bee’s Wrap beeswax wraps don’t provide as tight a seal as plastic wrap, they do a good job of keeping produce fresh for several days or sometimes longer. A recent single-use plastic and paper ban in New Jersey led to numerous complaints that grocery delivery customers were amassing too many reusable bags. The state is now considering remedies, such as requiring delivery services to establish programs to reuse or recycle customers' unwanted bags. Sobeys also did not offer details about its grocery delivery system, but CBC News found the information on its website. Although Sobeys has banned single-use plastic bags at the checkout counter, according to its site, it still uses them for grocery delivery in Ontario. Out of all the lids we tried, we preferred the thicker, sturdier, clear Lékué Suction Lid and Multifunction Suction Lid.
The bag can’t seal without the plastic bar (which you can’t buy separately if it’s lost), which you slide across the top along a ridge. It goes in only one direction, and you need to check the somewhat hard-to-read arrows on the bar and the bag to make sure they’re facing the same direction. Sliding the bar across gets sticky near the end, and that extra resistance requires dexterity and hand strength to get it over the finish line. And since the bar is heavier than the bag, it’ll make the bag flop over if it’s not full. There’s a pull tab on one side, which you hold while sliding the bar in the opposite direction.
Bogatireva even uses the Stasher bags to bring home restaurant leftovers, since Stashers are lighter in weight and pack down smaller than a container. And if you’re laying the bags flat or lining them up vertically in the fridge, you don’t have to worry about leaks; the seals popped open only when we applied pressure to the bags. Our picks will come in handy for grocery shopping, prepping meals, and storing leftovers. The holidays are a time for everyone to gather 'round and appreciate the simple beauty of being together. It can also be challenging to reach into smaller Stasher bags and may require a bottle brush. It’s difficult to keep these bags airtight, making them less ideal for the freezer and sous vide. After 48 hours, the mango I froze in them had lots of crystals, and the sides of the bags had lots of frost, too. I couldn’t displace all the air in the bag when I sous vide pork chops, but because of the standing bottom, the bag also didn’t tip over or float, so I left the bag standing up in the water bath. The chop turned out dry and flavorless, and the bag retained the smell from the fish sauce marinade even after a run through the dishwasher. The Stasher bags were easy to hand-wash, thanks to the rounded corners, but there are many ridges in the seal that harbor food, which can be a tough task for a sponge to tackle.

The Baggu is made from ripstop nylon, is water-resistant, and can hold up to 50 pounds. Corey Rateau of grocery-delivery service Good Eggs likes the wraps for preserving produce odds and ends. Every bag has a platform bottom, so they’re easy to fill, wash, and dry. Since these bags stay open when unsealed, they can be placed anywhere in the dishwasher, even in areas that don’t have tines. The downside is the bags washed in the dishwasher came out with many water spots, making the frosted silicone even more difficult to see through.
